Rebuilding Together |
Christmas in April St. Paul's Parish began with a group of community minded citizens deciding that they would like to improve the living conditions for their less fortunate neighbors. With help and support from the National Organization, Christmas in April-St. Paul's Parish was incorporated as a Nonprofit Corporation in August of 1999. The organization applied for and received a 501 (c) 3 status - ID # 31215. The National Organization changed its name in 2000 to Rebuilding Together, and in Jan. of 2003 it was voted to change our name to reflect that of National. Thus we are now known as Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April, St. Paul's Parish. St. Paul's Parish is a geographical location in Charleston County that includes the Towns of Hollywood, Meggett, Ravenel, and the unincorporated areas of Adams Run and Yonges Island.
Local businesses, as well as Corporations with in the State help with financial support, as do several area Clubs and Churches. Along with our fundraising committee, House Captains and volunteers set out to obtain donations and material, and to sign up more volunteers. Each homeowner is asked to seek volunteers from within their family and church also. By the time we were ready to start in 2000 we had about 135 volunteers. In our second year we had over 200 volunteers, in 2002 we had 250 volunteers and 2003 saw about 275 volunteers. We have licensed contractors, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and a large number of unskilled people who are willing to paint, clean, haul debris, etc. St. Paul's Fireman volunteers put smoke detectors in each home, and the Garden Club provides lovely dish gardens or plants for each of the homeowners.
On the last Saturday in April, at about 8:30 a.m. St. Paul's Parish comes alive with people, working side by side to replace roofs, refurbish kitchens, bathrooms, repair damaged floors and put in new floor covering. As we work together, we learn more about our neighbors and make new friends. At the end of the day volunteers and homeowners gather for a picnic and share with each other the day's accomplishments. We finish the day, tired and dirty but with that good feeling that comes from doing something positive in our community.
We ask for your prayers for safe and successful work days, for Donations to pay for materials and for volunteers to come and work with us. May the spirit of love for one another , we can continue to bring help to our elderly, disabled and low income neighbors.
